The Fairfax County Asian American History Project (FCAAHP) will involve Fairfax County residents in the researching, recording, preservation, writing and promotion of history regarding the experiences of Asian American groups that have chosen Fairfax County as their home.  The Honorable Sharon BulovaChairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is the lead sponsor of the history and community development project.

The stories will provide information on how, why and when different Asian American groups came to the U.S. and to Fairfax County, where they have settled and what their experiences and contributions have been to the Fairfax County community. Fairfax County Asian American residents number about 160,000 or some 16% of the Fairfax County population -- the largest minority group in Fairfax County since 1990.

By May 2010 -- the first book on Fairfax County Asian Americans will be published.
By 2010 -- establish the Fairfax County Asian American History Web Presence.
Other products may include articles, video programs.

2. Who is the audience for the products?
All Fairfax County residents.
The book is a Fairfax County community development project aimed at
a better understanding of the Asian American community in Fairfax County
by Asian Americans themselves -- as well as all their neighbors.

3. What is the model for the history project?
A Look Back at Braddock History Project sponsored by Supervisor Sharon Bulova.

4. How will the project be accomplished?
Oral history interviews of Fairfax County Asian American residents from 2008-2010,
to include first, second and third-generation Asian Americans.
The first interviews will involve the Task Force participants.
Task Force participants will provide lists of interviewees
beginning with English language speakers.

5. What Fairfax County Asian American communities will be interviewed?
Americans with origins in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia 
are included in the Census definition of Asian Americans:

Each chapter could include the following:
1. History of Asian Americans in Fairfax County -- using census/other research data
2. Patriotism -- Fairfax County Asian Americans in military and national security
3. Education -- Fairfax County Asian Americans teachers and students
4. Caregivers -- Fairfax County Asian American doctors, nurses
5. Entrepreneurs -- Fairfax County business owners/managers
6. Community Activitists -- Fairfax County candidates, association leaders
7. Public Servants -- Fairfax County officers in USG or international organizations
8. Sports -- Fairfax County sports figures
9. Arts -- Fairfax County Performing Artists, writers, etc.
10. Faith -- Fairfax County Asian American religious community leaders

Supervisor Sharon Bulova on 6/20/2007 approved the draft goals and objectives.  On 7/11/2007, the Fairfax History Commission unanimously voted to support the project.  The draft program is still evolving so please email Cora Foley (corazonfoley@fanhs-nova.org)  if you wish to volunteer for the project and/or to provide suggestions on the historical research -- as well as names of possible interviewees for the history project, and invitees for the first town hall meeting on January 2008. We have started research on the Filipino Americans in Fairfax County and we invite other Asian  American groups to organize their historical research projects as well.

Meeting with Supervisor Sharon Bulova, Cora Foley, and Mary Lipsey on  an oral history research project on Asian Americans in Fairfax county. 


Supervisor Sharon Bulova approved goals/timelines for project.


Fairfax County History Commission unanimously voted to support the project. The Commission will write a letter to Fairfax County High School Social Studies Teachers to encourage their students to achieve credit hours for community service in civics by participating in the project.

Planning Goals:

For The Asian Americans in Fairfax County History Project: The project will involve local Asian  American citizens in the recording, preservation and promotion of Fairfax County’s history to produce a series of books/articles that describe the different waves of Asian American residents in Fairfax County, their contributions and experiences.


Planning Objective:

For The Asian Americans in Fairfax County History Project: timeline and to do lists.

  • In January 2008, Vice Chairman Sharon Bulova of the Board of Supervisors will call a town meeting to announce the project and introduce members of the Asian American communities who will lead research teams in each of their communities. Cora Foley will lead the Filipino American research team.
  • By March 29, 2008, the team will attend oral history training to prepare for oral history workdays.
  • By April 29, the oral history collection team will practice in preparation for collecting histories.
  • In May 2008, the team will sponsor a meeting about the project to engage the Asian  American community and local media – inviting as speakers representatives of the Asian  American community.
  • Oral histories will be collected through the end of 2008 – with occasional meetings by each group to discuss findings with the communities.
  • Starting in January 2009, the results of the oral histories will be analyzed to develop the outline of the first book which will include an overview of all the Asian American communities in Fairfax County.
  • In May 2009, the team will sponsor the second meeting to discuss the progress of the project as part of the county’s celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
  • The rest of 2009 and early 2010 will be devoted to writing and publishing the first book on Asian American History in Fairfax County.

In May 2010, the first book will be officially launched and a meeting will be held to discuss follow-up research by each community. The Filipino American community will proceed with projects for book(s) on Filipino Americans in Fairfax County.
 
Experience Goal:

For The Asian American History in Fairfax Project: The target audience will be able to use the first book/related articles produced by the project to develop a richer understanding of the contributions of Asian Americans in the growth and prosperity of Fairfax County – and understand the struggles that each community experienced in their American odyssey in the county.

Experience Objective:

    For The Asian Pacific American History in Fairfax Project:

    • The target audience will be better able to identify the contributions of the Asian Pacific American community in Fairfax County.
    • The target audience will better appreciate the diverse history and cultures of the Asian Pacific American community that enrich the county.
    • The target audience will better understand the difficult conditions experienced in Fairfax County by the Asian Pacific American community
    • The target audience will be more interested in local history and preservation efforts.
    • The project will encourage participation by the Asian Pacific American community in historical research and other community programs.


    Note on Book Content:

    • The first book on Asian Pacific Americans in Fairfax County will include a timeline discussing the experiences of Asian Americans as they settled in the U.S.
    • The chapters will proceed through the waves of immigration beginning with the earlier groups: Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Koreans, Vietnamese.
